What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the persistent inability to attain and maintain an erection sufficient to permit satisfactory sexual performance. ED is also known as impotence.

ED is a very common condition, particularly in older men. It is estimated that half of all men between the ages of 40 and 70 will have it to some degree.

The risk factors for erectile dysfunction are obesity, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, endothelial dysfunction, lack of exercise, and smoking.

Erectile dysfunction is a complicated disorder with several possible organic and/or psychogenic causes. It can also be drug induced.

  • Organic causes may be hypertension, hyperlipidaemia (high cholesterol), diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, hypogonadism, hyper-and hypothyroidism, Cushing’s disease.
  • Psychogenic causes may be situational (for example due to psychiatric illness [such as depression]) or generalized (for example due to lack of arousability).
  • Drugs that can cause erectile dysfunction include antihypertensives, antipsychotics, and antidepressants.

Sildenafil (generic Viagra) and tadalafil (generic Cialis) are the most commonly prescribed erectile dysfunction medications. They are both effective and safe. It’s your personal preference really.

Erectile dysfunction is a common problem amongst men who have diabetes affecting 35-75% of male diabetics.

Men suffering from diabetes (up to 75%) will experience some degree of erectile dysfunction (erection problems) over the course of their lifetime.
