National guidelines warn that types contraception that contain hormones, or HRT, might affect how well EllaOne works if you've used them in the last 7 days. If you are in the 72 hour time frame to use levonorgestrel (Levonelle) then this would be the preferred choice. However if you are outside of this timeframe you can still choose EllaOne, but it may not be as effective, and you should not restart your contraception or HRT until 5 days later. The copper coil is another option for emergency contraception that is not affected by hormones and can be inserted at your local sexual health clinic.

Dear ,

If you have used an emergency contraceptive pill in the last 7 days, and you need to use it again, you must make sure you use the same type of pill again. EllaOne can stop levonorgestrel (Levonelle) from working as well and vice versa if they're used within 7 days of each other. Please make sure that you select the same pill.

The morning after pill can be affected by your weight. If your BMI is over 26, or your weight is more than 70kg (11st) then levonorgestrel (Levonelle) may be less effective, and EllaOne may be more effective. If your BMI is over 30, or your weight is more then 85kg (13st) then EllaOne may not be able to work as well. In this case a better option would be the copper coil, which you can discuss with your GP or sexual health clinic.

If you have given birth within the last 21 days, your chances of getting pregnant are minimal and you don't need emergency contraception. This doesn't include terminations, abortions or miscarriages.

Dear ,

If you are breastfeeding, EllaOne can be used but as it can get into the breastmilk it's advised that you do not breastfeed for 7 days and you should express and discard your breastmilk in that time and use an alternative feed for your baby. If you are in the time frame to use levonorgestrel (Levonelle) then this may be the preferred choice as this can be used safely and you can continue to breastfeed.

If you have taken Norethisterone, Utovlan or Primolut N within the last 7 days, then you should not use EllaOne emergency contraceptive because it might not work as well as it should. You should choose Levonorgestrel or Levonelle instead. If it's too late to take these (more than 72 hours since you had sex), then you should contact your GP or local sexual health clinic to get the coil fitted as emergency contraception instead.
This does not apply if you've taken Provera period delay medication, or if there'll be more than a 7 day gap by the time you take your morning after pill.

You should consider levonorgestrel/Levonelle.

Dear ,

If you've had other episodes of unprotected sex since your last period and have not used emergency contraception, you should take a pregnancy test before doing anything else.

You may still become pregnant if you take the morning after pill in the middle of your menstrual cycle.

EllaOne is more effective than levonorgestrel or Levonelle.
EllaOne can be taken any time up until 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex.
Levonorgestrel can be taken up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex, but is more effective the earlier it's taken.
